Rivers Tyne & Esk Clear of Flowering Plants Again!
Giant Hogweed Eradication Star badge

Giant Hogweed Eradication Star

This coveted badge is awarded only to those who help with our green tick surveys. Only 4 were awarded this year. No plant, no matter how tall, can hide from its proud holders. Wear it with pride (and gloves).

River Tyne: Year 8

We have reached the end of Year 8 of the River Tyne Giant Hogweed Eradication Programme. Once again all 48 miles of the Tyne and its tributaries were given a “green tick”: free of any known flowering Giant Hogweed. Our thanks to all the spotters, the green tick inspectors and the landowners who did the spraying and digging, and to Bayer UK for their continuing support. Read the 2026 River Tyne report here

River Esk: Year 5 (upper) and Year 6 (lower)

We have again achieved even more success than last year across the whole Esk catchment, with more landowners getting involved, especially around Musselburgh. By the end of August the vast majority of areas had been given a green tick. We need extra spotters to survey the most upstream parts of the Esk next year. Read the full 2026 River Esk report here

Our maxim remains: no plant must be allowed to flower. A single flowering plant can produce over 10,000 seeds.
